Spring Cleaning
10 January 2008
We love Spring sunshine but it can sometimes reveal things it shouldn’t! Blitz your house after the Winter period and give it its sparkle back. Here are our top ten Spring cleaning tips to help you turn a chore into a breeze:
1. Declutter. Get rid of everything that you don’t need. If you or the kids haven’t used it for six months then chances are you don’t really need it. Give it away to someone who does, recycle it or store it. The less stuff you have laying around the easier it will be to clean and tidy. 2. Music. All household tasks are easier and more fun with music in the background. Classical is calming and helps to focus your mind, pop music will get you moving! 3. Set the timer. If you find it hard to stay focused, then set a timer or stopwatch. Give yourself 20 minutes to complete each task – clearing out and cleaning the fridge, sorting the laundry into piles, cleaning the kitchen windows. 4. Set yourself a target. If your house is in serious need of a make-over, don’t expect to finish it all in one day. Concentrate on one room at a time. 5. Use stylish storage. The better looking the storage, the more likely you are to actually use it! 6. Use natural cleaning products wherever possible. Too many chemicals or anti-bacterial sprays are harmful to the environment and can be detrimental to our health. Some types of reusable microfibre cloths don’t need any chemicals to clean very effectively. All the elbow grease you’ll use will be the equivalent of a great workout at the gym! Try this great homemade solution for cleaning wood: Mix one part olive oil with one part lemon juice. Rub on furniture or apply with a spray bottle, then polish with a dry cloth. This all-natural mix will make wood gleam! 7. Get the kids involved. Even the smallest children can enjoy sorting laundry, dusting and fetching and carrying. Older children can actually be genuinely helpful! As much as we don’t want to encourage bribery, buying children a small present for their rooms can really motivate them to tidy and declutter their own personal space. 8. Surfaces first, floors last. Make sure hoovering or sweeping is the final job you do in each room. This avoids having to do it twice! 9. Heaven scent. A few drops of lavender or other essential oil in the filter of your vacuum cleaner means you can scent your home as you clean. 10. Reward yourself! You’ve done it – make sure you take time to sit down and relax with a book or magazine and a cup of tea. |
