There’s nothing like a barbeque. Food just seems to taste better when it is cooked outside in the fresh air, whether it is simple bangers on the beach or a party in your garden. Kids love the freedom of being able to run around and play and occasionally grab food as they zip past!

Urchin’s top tips for a successful barbeque are:
Voluptous Veg. A small barbeque can be very useful if you have strict vegetarians in your party – barbequed veg kebabs are delicious but not so good if covered in meat fat! (See right for our Green Barbeque)
Feed the masses. If you don’t like paper plates and don’t want to get out your best china, why not use melamine tableware to feed the masses.

Not just burgers! Don’t forget vegetables and fish – both delicious. Wrap salmon in foil and grill for a few minutes. Thread veg onto skewers (baby corn, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, red onions). Stuff big flat mushrooms with chopped cherry tomatoes, grated cheese, basil, chopped mushroom stalks and spring onions, wrap in foil and bung on the barbie.

BBQ Games. It’s always a good idea to get lots of games ready just in case. Games are a great way for the family to have fun together, work as a team and burn off that chocolate pudding.

Party Decorations. A BBQ is usually a good way to get family and friends together. So why not turn it into a party and decorate outdoors with banners and brighten up your table.

Recipe - Barbequed bananas
Take a banana. Peel back a little of the skin, make a
little hollow in the banana and push in some blocks of
chocolate or marshmallows (or both!). Fold back the
skin, wrap the banana in foil and push into the coals
(perfect when the barbeque is dying back at the end).
Leave until the banana is squishy and the chocolate is
melted – yum!
